Our History

The story of American workwear excellence since 1889

Founding

Hamilton Carhartt founded the company in 1889 in Detroit, Michigan with just two sewing machines and five employees. His goal was to create durable workwear for railroad workers.

The company's motto was "Honest value for an honest dollar," reflecting Hamilton's commitment to providing high-quality goods at fair prices.

Expansion

By the early 1900s, Carhartt had expanded with facilities across the United States and internationally. The company's commitment to workers was demonstrated during the Great Depression.

The "Back to the Land" program provided clothes and land to unemployed workers, showing Carhartt's dedication to supporting the American workforce.

Modern Legacy

Today, Carhartt remains a family-owned business, now in its fourth generation. The brand has evolved while maintaining its commitment to durability and quality craftsmanship.

Carhartt Work In Progress (WIP) launched in Europe in 1989, bringing workwear-inspired fashion to a broader audience while preserving the brand's authentic heritage.
